What effect does branching of an alkane chain has on its boiling points?

Answer»

Branching of an alkane chain makes the molecules more compact and brings the various atoms closer. As a result, the molecular size decreases. This decreases the surface area and therefore, the magnitude of van der Waals forces also decreases. Hence, the boiling point of the alkane decreases with branching.
