What effect does branching of an alkane chain has on its boiling points? |
|
Answer» Branching of an alkane chain makes the molecules more compact and brings the various atoms closer. As a result, the molecular size decreases. This decreases the surface area and therefore, the magnitude of van der Waals forces also decreases. Hence, the boiling point of the alkane decreases with branching. |
