What happens when : (i) Ethanol is mixed with conc. H_(2)SO_(4) at 273K. |
|
Answer» Solution :Due to the presence of two lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom, alcohol acts as a Lewis BASE. THEREFORE, at 273K, ethanol reacts with `H_(2)SO_(4)` to form oxonium salts (protonated alcohols). (ii) Excess of ETHYL alcohol is heated with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` at 413K. (iii) Ethanol is heated with excess of conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` at 443K. |
