1.

What is a chemical equation? What are its essential features?

Answer»

The qualitative and quantitative representation of a chemical reaction in short form in terms of symbols and formulae is called chemical equation. For example, on heating calcium carbonate, it gives Caco3 →Ca0 + CO2

Essential features:

(I) It should represent a true chemical reaction.

(II) The formulae for all reactants and products must be correct.

(III) It should be arithmetically balanced, i.e., the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the arrow should be equal.
