What is a homologous series of carbon compounds? Give an example and list its three characteristics. |

Answer» Homologous series may be defined as a series of similarly constituted compounds in which the members possess similar chemical characteristics and the two consecutive members differ in their molecular formula by – CH2 . Eg. Alkane series (CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C4H10) Characteristics of Homologous Series : (i) All the members of a series can be represented by the same general formula. e.g. General formula for alkane series is CnH2n+2 . (ii) The members in any particular family have almost identical chemical properties. Their physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, density etc, show a regular gradation with the increase in the molecular mass. (iii) The members of a particular series can be prepared almost by the identical methods. |
