What is a hypotonic solution ?

Answer»

Solution :Hypotonic solutions : When two solutions have DIFFERENT osmotic PRESSURES, then the solution having lower osmotic pressure is SAID to be a hypotonic solution with respect to the other solution.
EXPLANATION : Consider two solutions of the substances A and B having osmotic pressures `pi_(A) and pi_(B)`. If `pi_(B)` is less than `pi_(A),` then the solution B is a hypotonic solution with respect to the solution A.
Hence, if `C_(A) and C_(B)` are their concentrations, then, `C_(B)ltC_(A)`. Hence, for EQUAL volumes of the solutions, `n_(B) lt n_(A).`
