What is a racemic mixture |
|
Answer» In chemistry, a racemic mixture, or racemate(/reɪˈsiːmeɪt, rə-, ˈræsɪmeɪt/), is one that has equal amounts of LEFT- and RIGHT-HANDED enantiomers of a chiral molecule. The first known racemic mixture was racemic acid, which Louis Pasteur found to be a mixture of the two enantiomeric isomers of tartaric acid. Two mirror images of a chiral molecule are called enantiomers or optical isomers. Pairs of enantiomers are often designated as "right-", "left-handed" or, if they have no bias, "ACHIRAL". ... A right handed rotation is dextrorotary (d); that to the left is levorotary (l). |
