What is amphoteric oxide? And write its reaction with acid and base |
Answer» The oxide which shows both acidic and basic nature when reacted with acids and base. Eg Al2O3. Al2O3 + HCl ----> AlCl3 + H2O Al2O3 + NaOH ---->NaAlO2 + H2O In first reaction amphoteric oxide is reacted with acid in which it forms a salt and water. Similarly in second reaction it is reacted with a base in which it forms salt and water.<br>Oxides of metals which have both acidic as well as basic behaviour are known as amphoteric oxidesExample:- Acidic medium :-Al2O3+6HCl---> 2AlCl3+3H2OBasic medium :- Al2CO3+2NaOH---> 2NaAlO2+H2O | |
