What is blood doping?

Answer»

Blood doping is an illegal practice of injecting oxygenated blood into an athlete before an event. This boosts the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream and thus enhances athletic performance. These blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles and improves an athlete’s aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and endurance due to higher concentration in the blood. This technique helps to improve the athletes performance temporarily but it may prove fatal at times.
