What is centromere ? Explain the types of chromosomes based on the position of the centromere. |

Answer» Centromere is the region of a chromosome to which the microtubules of the spindle attach via the kinetochore, during cell division. (a) Metacentric : Chromosome has middle centromere forming two equal arms. (b) Sub-metacentric : Chromosome has centromere slightly away from the middle of the chromosome, resulting in one short and one long arm. (c) Acrocentric : Chromosome has one extremely short arm and a very long arm. (d) Telocentric : Chromosome has a terminal centromere. |
