Answer» Elements are the pure substance which cannot be broken into simpler substance Elements are the simplest substances in nature. There are around 90 naturally occurring elements on earth. They cannot be broken down into anything simpler by physical or chemical means. They consist of only one kind of atom and they can exist as either atoms (e.g., argon, calcium, aluminium) or molecules (oxygen, nitrogen). We can define elements as a species of atoms which have the same number of protons in their atomic nuclei. Although an element’s atoms have the same number of protons, they can have different numbers of neutrons and hence different masses.
