What is free expansion |
Answer» Free expansion means the expansion of a gas when the external pressure (pext) ) is zero. So the expansion of a gas in vacuum is free expansion as the external pressure is zero. The work done in the free expansion of a gas is always zero, wether the process is carried out reversibly or irreversibly. Secondly, the free expansion of the gas isothermal if no heat exchange is allowed between the system and the surrounding that is if the free expansion is carried out adiabatically, then it is isothermal. | |
