1.

What is fuel cell? Give the electrode reactions of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell.

Answer»

Fuel cell: Fuel cell is galvanic cell which converts directly heart energy obtained from combustion of fuels in cell into electrical energy. Gases like hydrogen, methane, etc. are used in fuel cells. The most successful fuel cell is hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell.

The reaction taking place in hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell-

At cathode: O2 (g) + 2H2O (l) + 4e- → 4OH- (aq)

At anode: 2H2O (g) + 4OH- (aq.) → 4H2O (l) + 4e-1

Net reaction: 2H2 (g) + O2 (g) → 2H2O (l)
