What is LDPE? Give its preparation and uses.

Answer»

Solution :(i) LDPE is low density poly ethylene. It is formed by heating ethene at` 200^(@)` to `300^(@)C` under oxygen as a catalyst. This reaction follows FREE radical mechanism. The peroxide formed from oxygen acts as a free radical initiator.
` underset("(ethene)")(nCH_2=CH_2) underset(1000 atm)overset(200^(@) - 300^(@)C)to underset("(POLYTHENE)")((--CH_(2)-CH_(2)--)_n)`
(ii) LDPE is USED as insulation for CABLES, making toys.
