Answer» Oh, that's just a single-layered cell STRUCTURE CONTAINING the stomata and the guard CELLS. This layer secretes a WAXY substance --- cuticle which keeps the leaf moist and water-proof. The lower epidermis basically protects the undersurface of the leaf. There is a similar UPPER epidermis too.
