all science done in right earnest is meaningful
if someone had not thought of matter waves you would not be having MODERN electronics or nanotechnology today!
i am a PERSON of physics and can cite few examples from my subject
perhaps the quote is attributed to NOBEL laureate Linus Pauling. it goes something like this-
‘expecting pure physics to give immediate results is like impregnating nine women simultaneously and expecting a baby a month later’
unfortunately, in today’s world ‘meaningful’ CARRIES only one connotation - commercially successful
by that reckoning study of mathematics will be ‘meaningless’ !
spending on study of basic subjects is a long-term INVESTMENT
