The electrical energy is generated by the reaction of H₂ and O₂ without evolution of any heat called “Cold combustion” With alkaline electrolyte the half-cell reactions are: H₂+2OH- ---> 2 H₂O+2 eH₂O +1/2 O₂ ----> 2OH- H₂ + ½ O_2- ---> H₂O E⁰ = 1.23 V Efficiency is up to 85% which in rechargeable secondary cells is about 40%.
