(ii) It meant artisans and peasant householders entered into a mutually negotiated system of remuneration most of the time goods for services. 18th century mentions about the zamindars of Bengal. (iii) These zamindars remunerated blacksmiths, carpenters and even goldsmiths for their work by paying them a small daily allowance and diet money. (iv) In Maharashtra village artisans were compensated by villagers for their unique services giving land probably cultivable waste. Such lands became artisans water or miras-their hereditary holding.
