Your question has two answers. Infact, There are two different PARTS CALLED medulla.
If you observe lateral section of Human kidney, There are two zones.
- Dark coloured outer zone
- Pale INNER zone
This pale inner zone is called medulla.
There exist one more medulla, it's medulla oblongata.
In Hind brain, there are two parts, namely - Cerebellum, Medulla oblongata.
Medulla oblongata is triangle in shape almost. Extending from pons to spinal cord , It contains white and grey matters.
It's centre for many activities like cardiac, vasomotor activities. Also It's FUNCTION is to coordinate some activities like swallowing, vomitting, sneezing, coughing.
