What is the basic difference between a group and a period in terms of electronic configuration ?

Answer»

In a group, though the number of shells increases as we move downward, but the number of electrons in the outermost shell remains the same.

In a period, as we move from left to right, the outermost shell or valence shell gets progressively filled from group 1 to group 18 and the shell does not change.
