What is the role of graphite rod in the electro metallurgy of aluminium ?

Answer»

SOLUTION :During the electrolysis of alumina, the `O_2` GAS is liberated at a high temperature. `O_2` gas reacts with graphite electrodes to form CO and `CO_2`, there by preventing oxygen to react with ALUMINUM to form `Al_2O_3` again.
Anode : `C_((s)) + O_((L))^(2-) to CO_((g)) + 2e^(-)`
`C_((s)) + 2O_((l))^(2-) to CO_(2(g))+ 4e^(-)`
