It was because of the following reasons: (i) During the First World War, the British industries focused on meeting the war needs of the army. This led to the decline of imports from Manchester. (ii) This created a void in the Indian markets which was filled by the Indian industries. (iii) There was a rise the prices of food and other essential things. (iv) Villagers were called upon to supply soldiers, and the forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger. |
