A Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 as per the recommendation of the Cabinet Mission to frame the constitution for independent India. Dr.Rajendra Prasad was the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly and B.R.Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the constitution. The constitution was framed after detailed discussions and deliberations. The Constituent Assembly unanimously adopted the constitution on 26th November 1949. The constitution of free India came into existence on 26 January 1950 and India was declared a republic.
