In January 1967, the central government held a special ‘Opinion Poll’ in Goa asking people to decide if they wanted to be a part of Maharashtra or remain separate. 2. The majority was in favor of remaining outside of Maharashtra, thus Goa became a Union territory. 3. Goa was granted statehood in 1987. |
