When unpolarized light is incident on the interface separating the rarer medium and the denser medium, Brewster angle is found to b 60°. Determine the refractive index of the denser medium.

Answer»

According to Brewster’s law, when unpolarized light is incident on the interface separating the rarer medium and the denser medium, the reflected light is fully polarized provided

µ = tan ip,

where µ is refractive index of medium and ip is polarizing angle or Brewster angle.

Given: ip = 60º. Therefore,

µ = tan 60° = 3 = 1.732

Refractive index of denser medium is 1.732.
