1.

Which compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in S_(N)2 reaction with OH^(-)? 2. (CH_3)_(3)C Cl or CH_(3)Cl.

Answer»

Solution :`S_(N)2` reactivity of alkyl HALIDES increases as the hindrance AROUND the `alpha`-CARBON (i.e., the carbon undergoing NUCLEOPHILIC attack) decreases and ALSO the +ve polarsation of the `alpha`-carbon increases. Both these factors are favourable for `CH_(3)Cl` and hence, it reacts faster in `S_(N)2` reaction with `OH^(Theta)`.
