Which hormone is secreted when growing plants detect light? Why do plants appear to bend towards light?

Answer»

When growing plants detect light a hormone calledauxin, synthesized at the shoot tip helps the cells to grow longer. When light is coming from one side of the plant, auxindiffuses towards the shady side of the shoot.

Under normallightconditions auxins are spread out in theplant. But when sunlight varies, auxin is broken down on the sunnier side of the stem. The higher concentration of auxin on the shady side causes theplantcells on that side to grow more so itbendstoward thelight.
