Which is a stronger reducing agent Cr^(2+) or Fe^(2+) and why?

Answer»

Solution :`Cr^(2+)` is stronger reducing agent than `FE^(2+)` because in case of chromium the configuration changes from `d^(4) " to" d^(3).d^(3)` is STABLE in aqueous medium DUE to HALF filled `t_(2_(g))` orbitals while in case of Fe, the configuration changes from `d^(6)` to `d^(5)`. As the stability of `d^(3)` is more than `d^(5)` in aqueous medium, `Cr^(2+)` is a good reducing agent.
