Which is a stronger reducing agent `Cr^(2+)` or `Fe^(2+)` and why ? |
Answer» `Cr^(2+)` is a stronger reducing agent than `Fe^(2+)`. Reason . `E_(Cr^(3+) //Cr^(2+))^(@) `is `-ve ( -0.41V)` whereas `E_(Fe^(3+) //Fe^(2+))^(@)` is `+ve ( + 0.77V)`. Thus, `Cr^(2+)` is easily oxidized to `Fe^(3+)` but `Fe^(2+)` cannot be easily oxidized to `Fe^(3+)` . Hence, `Cr^(2+)` is stronger reducing agent than `Fe^(2+)` |
