Which is better reducing agent, C or CO at 710""^(@)C (983K)?

Answer»

Solution :Carbon monoxide is a BETTER reducing agent at `710""^(@)C` than carbon whereas carbon is a better reducing agent at higher temperatures (above 1123K). This can be explained on the basis of ELLINGHAM diagram. `triangleG-T` CURVE for `CO to CO_(2)` LIES below the curve for `C to CO_(2)` below `710""^(@)C (983 K)` but above 1123K, the two curves change their positions.
