The chemical formula of sodium hydrogen carbonate is `NaHCO_(3)` it is often used as an antacid because it neutralises excess of HCl secreated from the walls of stmach. `NaHCO_(3)(s) + HCl(aq) rarr NaCl(aq) + H_(2)O(l) + CO_(2)` However, excessive hydrogen carbonate can make the stomach alkaline and trigger the production of even more acid.
