Which period is referred to the Reign of Terror in the history of France? Give reasons |
| Answer» The period from September 1793 to July 1794 is\xa0referred to as the ‘Reign of Terror’. During this\xa0period, Robespierre, who ruled France at that time,\xa0followed a policy of severe control and punishment\xa0and terrorised people with his harsh measures.\xa0M those whom he regarded as ‘enemies’ of the\xa0republic e.g. nobles, clergy or members of his or other\xa0political parties, were arrested and tried by a\xa0revolutionary tribunal. If found guilty, they were\xa0guillotined. More than 15000 persons were\xa0guillotined during this period. The \'Reign of Terror\'\xa0became intolerable and people resented Robespierre\xa0and his\xa0followers. Finally, Robespierre was convicted\xa0and guillotined in Ju)y 1794 and the ‘Reign of\xa0Terror’ ended with his death. | |
