Which properties of seed help the distribution and dominance of Angiosperms on the earth ? |
|
Answer» (1) Seeds are most efficient propagules produced by plants due to sexual reproduction of angiosperms. The following properties of seeds help in the distribution and dominance of angiosperms on land. (2) Dormancy - It is temporary suspension of growth. Presence of growth inhibitors in seeds prevents their germination. (3) Viability - It is functional ability of seeds. After the dispersal of seeds they germinate after dormancy period. They germinate in favourable conditions. (4) Reserved food - In seeds food is stored in either endosperm or cotyledons which is utilized during its germination process. (5) Protective coat - Hard seed coat gives protection against mechanical injury. It helps in surviving fluctuations of temperatures and moisture availability. (6) Dispersal - Seeds are provided with certian modifications or structures which help them in their effective dispersal. The structures like wings, hairy calyx, persistent calyx, hooks, sticky substances help in their active or passive transport to distant places. The above mentioned featured have helped in dominance of Angiosperms on land. |
