While filling up of electrons in the atomic orbitals, the 4s orbital is filled before the 3d orbitals but reverse happens during the ionisation of the atom. Explain why? |

Answer» Solution :In an atom, ELECTRONS are filled according to (n+1) rule of INCREASING energy order. `3D rArr n =3, l= 2 rArr (n+l) = 5` `4d rArr n =4, l= 0 rArr (n+l) = 4` 4s is lower in energy than 3d and so, electrons first enters in 4s orbitals. During ionization the electrons are first REMOVED from 4s-orbitals because electrons in 4s are loosely HELD by the nucleus. |
