Answer» Edward Anthony Jenner, is known as the Father of Immunology cells originate in thebone marrowand mature in thethymus. In the thymus, T cells multiply anddifferentiateintohelper, regulatory, orcytotoxic T cellsor becomememory T cells. They are then sent toperipheraltissuesor circulate in thebloodorlymphatic system. Once stimulated by the appropriateantigen, helper T cells secrete chemical messengers calledcytokines, which stimulate the differentiation of B cells intoplasma cells(antibody-producing cells). Regulatory T cells act to control immune reactions, hence their name. Cytotoxic T cells, which are activated by various cytokines, bind to and kill infected cells andcancer cells. Function: As part of the adaptive immune response, they may recognise foreign antigens and can kill infected cells. They may also act as ‘helper’ cells by interacting with B cells, maturing them to become producers of antibodies. Also, T cells may become ‘regulatory’, dampening an immune response at the end of an infection. |
