Answer» In the history of Gujarat, the smallest victory margin registered by a candidate in a
LOK Sabha election
is that of
Satyajit Gaekwad
of the CONGRESS. In the 1996 general elections, Gaekwad defeated his BJP rival in Vadodara constituency by a margin of just 17 votes. In fact, Gaekwad is the only candidate in the state's history whose victory margin in a Lok Sabha election was in two digits.
The reason why Gaekwad was able to win in 1996 was that the BJP candidate was facing opposition from within his own party. Two independent candidates, Shubhangini Gaekwad and MADHU Srivastav, had polled 1.01 lakh and 50,981 votes respectively. It is also said that BJP rebels had put their WEIGHT behind the independent candidate Shubhangini Gaekwad
