Why alkaline earth metals are harder than alkali metals?

Answer»

Solution :(i) The STRENGTH of metallic bond in ALKALINE earth metals is higher than alkali metals due to the presence of 2 electrons in its OUTERMOST shell as compared to alkali metals, which have only 1 electron in Valence shell Therefore, alkaline earth metals are harder than alkali metals
(Ii) The alkaline earth metals have greater nuclear charge and more valence electrons, thus metallic bonding is more effective. Due to this they are harder than alkali metals.
