Why is boric acid considered as a weak acid ? |
|
Answer» Boric acid `(H_(3)BO_(3))` is a very weak acid `(k_(a)= 1xx10^(-9))`. Infact, it is a Lewis acid and accepts andelectron pair from `OH^(-)` ion of `H_(2)O` molecule, thereby releasing a proton `(H^(+))`. Moreover. `B(OH)_(3)+H-Ohrarr[B(OH)_(4)]^(-)+H^(+)` the hydrogen atoms already present in the acid are trapped in hydrogen bonds an d cannot be released easily. For detaisl. Consult text part. |
