Why is impure glycerol purified by distillation under reduced pressure?

At normal pressure, the boiling point of glycerol is 563 K but it decomposes on this temperature Therefore, simple distillation cannot be used.

Under a reduced pressure of 12 mm Hg, the glycerol can be distilled at 453 K without decomposition.
