Why is the trunk (main stem) of Cycas usually thick in the upper part and thin at the base ? |
Answer» In Cycas and other members of cycadopsida, the trunk is covered with an armour of persistent woody leaf bases. These leaf bases closely cover the stem and fortify it. The leaf boses of the basal portion of stem usually remain wet during the rainly season. They are thus disintegrated and destroyed by microrganisms and peeled off. the naked basal portions of trunk, therefore, become thin as compared to upper part. | |
