Number of shells is equal to the number of periods for an element. ( using electronic configuration ). Till atomic number 18 the electrons can fit in shells K, L and M as the maximum capacity of shell K is 2 , shell L is 8 and shell M is also 8. THUS, ELEMENTS having 3 shells ( K, L and M ) FALL in period number 3.
