From AUGUST 1918, the virus was spreading AROUND the world in several waves, INFECTING almost everyone. It CAUSED illness in 20% to 50% of infected people and death in 1% to 5%. Although the pandemic influenza virus lived on in the years after 1918-19, it tended to cause less severe disease in later years.
