Answer» The Chipko movement or Chipko andolan refers to a forest conservation movement. (i) The locals of Garhwali Himalayas in 1973, showed enormous bravery in protecting trees from the axe of contractors by hugging them. (ii) The main aim of this movement was to stop the felling to trees. (iii) Sunderlal Bahuguna was the leader of chipko movement. (iv) It was a non–violent, social and ecological movement which achieved a major victory in 1980 with a 15 years ban on tree felling in the Himalayan Forest of the state by the order of Mrs Indira Gandhi. |
