An Indian Wedding

Last month I attended the marriage ceremony of my cousin. The house was decorated. In the evening his friends and relatives gathered at his house. All were in fine dresses, Ladies were singing songs. My cousin put on a special dress. He sat on a decorated mare. There was a band-party with the ‘barat’. We went to the bride’s house. On the way, at places, his friends danced. The house of the bride was also decorated. The relatives of the bride welcomed us. The bridegroom went up to the gate. The bride came in a fine dress. She was looking very beautiful. They garlanded each other. They gave us tasty dinner. There was a ‘Pandit’. The bridegroom and the bride sat side by side. The ‘Pandit spoke out oaths. The bride and bridegroom repeated them, walked around the holy fire seven times. Now they were husband and wife.

एक भारतीय विवाह

गत माह मैंने अपने चचेरे भाई के विवाह समारोह में भाग लिया। मकान को सजाया गया था। शाम को उसके मित्र व उसके सम्बन्धी उसके घर एकत्र हुए। सभी बढ़िया पोशाकों में थे। स्त्रियाँ गाने गा रही थीं। मेरे चचेरे भाई ने विशेष पोशाक पहनी। वह एक सजी हुई घोड़ी पर बैठा।’ बारात’ के साथ बैंड था। हम दुल्हन के घर गये। रास्ते में स्थान-स्थान पर उसके मित्र नाचे। दुल्हन का मकान सजा हुआ था। दुल्हन के सम्बन्धियों ने हमारा स्वागत किया। दूल्हा दरवाजे पर गया। दुल्हन सुन्दर वस्त्रों में आई। वह बहुत सुन्दर दिखाई पड़ रही थी। उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को माला पहनाई। हमें स्वादिष्ट भोजन दिया गया। वहाँ एक ‘पण्डित’ था। दूल्हा व दुल्हन पास-पास बैठ गये। ‘पण्डित’ ने कुछ वचन बोले। दूल्हे व दुल्हन ने उन्हें दोहराया। उस जोड़े ने पवित्र अग्नि के सात फेरे लगाये। अब वे पति-पत्नी थे।
