TROPICAL cyclone Fani, said to be the most severe STORM to hit the Indian subcontinent in two decades, made a landfall on the coast of Odisha at 9:30 a.m. on the 3rd of May 2019. The cyclone unleashed rains and windstorm with speed up to 175 kmph. More than 1 million people were evacuated ahead of the storm, 15 districts along the Odisha coast were placed on red alert, and some 900 cyclone shelters were set up to house evacuees.

Large numbers of trees have been uprooted in Puri-Konark marine drive road, and the power supply has been affected badly in Puri, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Balugaon. The death toll of the cyclone has risen to over 30 and massive DESTRUCTION has been caused to the infrastructure.

Odisha is in need of rebuilding of infrastructure, assets, LIVELIHOOD and lives. The Smile Foundation Disaster Response Team is on the GROUND assessing the urgent needs of the cyclone affected families. An early relief effort has been initiated to distribute relief kits and necessary supplies.
