Answer» Answer: some changes INTRODUCED by British colonisation in Indian society are: a) Indian unification: British rule introduced institutional changes such as a professional civil service, unified judiciary and codified civil & criminal laws; thereby adding a new dimension of political unity to the cultural unity that had already EXISTED in India. b) modern transport & communication: such as Railways, roads & telegraph was introduced by British: 1. helped people to overcome geographic & cultural barriers; people from different regions came closer as long distance travel was undertaken more frequently; facilitating EXCHANGE of political ideas as well as mobilization & organization of people on important political & economic issues. 2. economic fate of people from different regions got tied together; say failure of crops in one region adversely affected PRICES & supply in another region. c) socio-religious reforms: initiated by British such as abolition of sati, widow remarriage were first attempts to establish a just social order in Indian society; such removal of social EVILS brought different sections of society together; gave confidence to women & depressed sections. d) western education: introduced by British brought Indians in contact with modern ideas such as democracy, civil rights, nation-states & rationalism; educated Indians deeply influenced by such modern ideas went on to lead the national movement. such changes introduced by British colonisation in Indian society fuelled the growth of Indian nationalism.
