1.

Write resonance structures of CH_(2)= CH-CHO. Indicate relative stability of the contributing structures

Answer»

Solution :The structures `CH_(2) = CH - overset(overset(O)(||))(C )-H` in which two alternate DOUBLE bond and one heteroatom ..O.. present and its three resonance structures are as under:

Stability : `(I) gt (II) gt (III)`
(I) Is the most STABLE, more number of COVALENT bond, each carbon and oxygen atom has an octet and no separation of opposite charge.
(II) There is negative charge on more electronegative atom and positive charge on more ELECTROPOSITIVE atom. Hence it is medium stable.
(III) It does not contribute of oxygen has positive charge and carbon has negative charge hence least stable (A) and (B) in resoance `(I) harr (II)`.
