Answer» British rulers started archaeological exploration and research in India in the 20th century. They established the Archaeological Survey of India and appointed Sir Alexander Cunningham as its first Director General. He mainly chose the sites mentioned in the Buddhist texts for excavations. Many other ancient sites were excavated under his supervision.
