Answer»

The structural formula of the alcohol that results when

acetaldehyde is reacted with CH,MgBr in the presence of

dry ether and the product is hydrolysed is CH3-CHOH-CH3

  • The REACTION involves TWO steps : 1) Reaction of Grignard reagent CH3MGBR with Acetaldehyde
  • 2) This leads to breakage of DOUBLE bond of carbonyl C and Oxygen.
  • It forms an adduct CH3CCH3H+O-MgBr.
  • This adduct is now hydrolysed , so the bond between O- and MgBr breakes to form an alcohol and an MgOHBr.
  • Thus the overall reaction leads to formation of Propane-2-ol and MgOHBr.
