Write the mechanisms of action of hydrogen bromide on tert-butyl methyl ether. |
|
Answer» Solution :When tert-butyl methyl ether is heated with hydrogen bromide tert-butyl bromide and METHANOL is FORMED. Reaction mechanism : (1) INITIALLY, tert-butyl methyl ether is protonated by hydrogen bromide to form tert-butyl methyl oxonium ion. ![]() (2) The cleavage of C-O BOND in protonated ether GIVES more stable tert-butyl carbocation and methyl alcohol. (3) Further, the more stable tert-carbocation reacts with bromide ion to form tert-butyl bromide.
