September 23: 

The sun comes vertically over the equator. The length of day and night is equal. The day is known as equinox.

December 22: 

The sun is vertically over the Tropic, of Capricorn. The day is known as winter solstice in Northern Hemisphere. This is the longest night and shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere.
